Three numbers from Mang0's historic losers run

By Jack "Jackie Peanuts" Moore | 07/19/21

Mang0 won Smash Summit 11 in historic fashion Sunday night, taking home over $46,000 as his reward for one of the greatest losers runs of all-time. Let's dive into three numbers that show how Mang0's incredible losers run fits into both his storied history and the storied history of the Smash Summit series.

7

won seven consecutive sets in losers at Smash Summit 11, his longest run at any offline tournament in the PGstats database, which dates back to September 2015. In the PGstats era, Mang0 has made a losers run of five or more sets seven times, winning three times: DreamHack Austin 2016, Royal Flush, and The Big House 9:

Mang0 accomplished a seven-set losers run to win a tournament at least a couple of times in the pre-PGstats era. At Evo 2013, Wobbles sent Mang0 to losers in Winners Quarterfinals. Mang0 would go on to defeat , , , and in losers before decimating Wobbles 6-1 in Grand Finals to take the tournament. Mang0's most historic losers run came 13 years ago at Pound 3. After falling to in Winners Top 48, Mang0 won 10 straight sets, defeating Mathos, Sliq, , , Azen, , Cort and PC Chris before double eliminating 3-2 and 3-1 in Grand Finals. What we saw on Sunday night was truly vintage Losers Bracket Mang0.

As the above section so well illustrates, Losers Bracket Mang0 can be a terror. Not so much at Smash Summit, until yesterday. In nine previous trips to losers bracket at offline Smash Summit main events, Mang0 was averaging 1.1 wins, sitting with a 10-9 set record. Only twice, at the bookends, Smash Summit 1 and Smash Summit 9, had Mang0 even managed multiple wins in losers bracket.
Prior to Smash Summit 11, Mang0 had only won multiple sets in losers bracket at a Summit main event twice: the first one, and the last offline one prior to this weekend. Click to expand.
Twice (Summits 7 and 8) he came up completely empty; the other five times, Summits 2 through 6, he was one-and-done. Mang0's 7-0 run through losers at Summit 11 increases his career losers bracket record at Summit 11 to 17-9 (65%), with 41 percent of those wins coming last night.

With a seven-set losers run at Smash Summit 11, Mang0 accomplished something that had never occurred in the illustrious history of the series.
In the 10 offline Smash Summits, there has never been a losers run to the championship from such an early winners side loss. In fact, the previous seven Summit champions all did so from winners side, with only the Summit 8 and 9 champions, and Hungrybox, even taking a loss in Grand Finals. The only other player to win Summit from losers side is Armada, all the way back at Summit 2, when he defeated , Mang0, Mew2King, and Hungrybox twice to win it all after falling to Mew2King in Winners Semis.
